But the charity's mission is shifting while precautionary measures limit normal operations. Our warehouses are curated by design teams that personalize homes based on our clients’ needs and preferences. More than a makeover, it gives “home” a new meaning. We are humble design, a non-profit helping families transitioning out of homeless shelters by providing furnishings and design services. We turn their empty house into a clean, dignified and welcoming home.
The group has transformed close to 600 homes in Chicago since 2017. This was the 108th home the volunteers and nonprofit have worked on this year. The family moved in last month but couldn’t afford to furnish their place. Without a table or chairs, they ate seated on the floor. It took us six weeks to gather all the furniture for the house she found and to decorate it. It was exciting work, but it was a project and, when it was done, I went back Forgotten Harvest. I would come home and somebody would be delivering a crib to my garage, or leaving towels on my front porch. We want our donations to go directly to families who are in need in Detroit, and we don’t want them to have to pay for delivery.
